Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together! Such a cool, unique idea!! Very inspiring <3 I will be sharing these resources with some of my wanderlust friends!! Im sure it will come in handy :)
Thank you for this! My vision is to grow awareness around regenerative traveling and also making these networks stronger so that traveling is accessible to everyone who wishes to explore the world. As a social worker I’ve seen youth and families who would benefit from experiencing a world outside of their current suffering but many times the people who need things most can’t afford the luxury to leave their situation - not even for one week.
I see many possibilities to offer meaningful community experiences through traveling and participating in maintaining these beautiful places that we can travel to. If we start seeing value in other things than money, then “work” can mean traveling between thriving communities around the world and then coming back to your own. We need a place to call a home and also experiences from other contexts and cultures.
Traveling slowly to be a part of maintaining life elsewhere in my mind makes traveling even more meaningful. And coming home that has been looked after by others even sweeter.
Community member/skill swaps are the future of traveling. We already do that in work life, travel to work in different locations. I wish to create a culture where that “work” can mean a variety of needed labour.
I really appreciate you gathering all these resources and ideas for how to choose accommodation in a way that enriches local human communities and ecology when travelling, but I am still having trouble wrapping my mind around the use of the word "regenerative" along side "travel".
Put simply, something being regenerative means leaving a place more ecologically enriched, biodiverse and alive then when you first got there, so how exactly could any form of current trans-continental travel fit that description?
The current airplanes and large boats are ecologically devastating in many ways, so only inter-continental method of travel that I could see as theoretically "regenerative" is a sail boat, and it would involve a journey where someone was engaging in some kind of oceanic regenerative stewardship along the way (perhaps using one, or a combination of the methods I described in this post on Regenerative Ocean Gardening, Kelp Farming and Marine Permaculture: https://gavinmounsey.substack.com/p/regenerative-ocean-gardening-kelp ).
Travelling on a bicycle or on foot etc on a land mass while engaging in regenerative works is possible for sure. It could involve regenerative guerilla gardening, seed saving, supporting regenerative businesses (as you suggested above) and more, but the long distance travel aspect of this post needs work for it to be truly regenerative travel in my opinion.
With regards to travelling on a land mass and being regenerative it makes me think of how some nomadic (or seasonally migratory) tribes of indigenous people of Turtle Island would carry seeds for long lived food and medicine producing trees with them, use controlled burns to clear brush, attract animals and then plant the seeds in the enriched soil before leaving to the next seasonal community spot (thereby leaving a trail of enriched biodiversity, enriched soil and multi-generational food production systems in their wake. The regenerative use of fire and animal stewardship may not be possible in most situations today but the seed planting surely is.
It also makes me think of John Chapman, the man we know as Johnny Appleseed.
Thanks for the post and for getting me thinking on this.
Thanks so much for these resources, Tijn! I am saving them for future use. I have actually been thinking of doing some Woofing 🍅 and I love your principle of resonance as a compass ✨
Amazing resource! Thanka for putting this together. Looking forward to digging into the links.
